Family Literacy
Cochise College offers a free program for parents and their children that allows all members of the family to learn and grow together. Family literacy is offered in partnership with Head Start and two school districts, Sierra Vista Public Schools and Douglas Unified School District. Parents attend school for 20 hours a week and participate in:
- Adult education, GED, English language acquisition, and civics
- Parent time
- Parent and child together time
- Community service and vocational experience
Parents You may attend GED or English language acquisition classes. In addition, you will learn parenting and vocational skills. Computer skills are integrated into all family literacy classes.
Parents and Children Together Parent and Child Together (PACT) offers both you and your child(ren)time to learn together as a family unit. You will share quality time by reading, writing and playing together. PACT time aids parents in affirming, discovering and expanding their resources as parents. It gives you the tools and techniques to support your child's learning in the home. Parents spend 45 minutes each day in their child's classroom seeing the world through their eyes.
Who qualifies? Parents or adult family members 16 years of age and older who have an adult education need may enroll. Each adult must have a child enrolled in Head Start, Carmichael Elementary School in Sierra Vista, or any elementary school that is part of the Douglas Unified School District.
