2007-2008 Cochise College Apaches

The 2006-07 Cochise College Apaches ended in a Region I semi-final loss to rival Arizona Western College. The Apaches finished the season 20-12, good enough for third in the ACCAC.

This year’s team must replace two all-conference performers. Alex White signed with Drake University, a Division I school in the powerful Missouri Valley Conference. Frank Borden now plays at American University, a Division I school in Washington, D.C. Also lost to graduation were AJ Adkins, who signed at Upper Iowa University; Justin Hopper, now at Park University; and Tyrone Crawford, who is playing at Wayland Baptist University.

The Runnin’ Apaches have a mix of returning sophomores and transfers who will try to win a championship. Dynile Forbes returns for his sophomore campaign at Camp Cochise after a stellar freshman season. Forbes, a very athletic wing, averaged more than 19 points per game last season and earned Second Team All-Region I honors. Sophomore post Sky Witt returns for his second season after backing up the powerful White last season. Witt, a muscular and fit 6’6 and 225 lbs., hails from nearby Sierra Vista. The Sky-Lord had a super off-season and is ready to really bang in the paint. Sophomore walk-on Kenny Begaye returns and brings toughness and perimeter shooting.

The Apaches will count on Mike Helton, the one hold-over from the 2005-06 ACCAC championship team, to bring his experience, skill, and toughness to the perimeter attack. The Runnin’ Apaches also will count on three sophomore transfers to bolster the squad’s attack this season. Mike Martin, a 6’5 combo forward from Tucson, brings strength and power to the line-up. Martin played the 05-06 season at Saddleback Junior College in California and red-shirted with the Apaches last season. The Apaches landed two sophomores from Milwaukee who played for the legendary Ty Moseler, a former Cochise assistant who now coaches at South Division High School in Milwaukee. Thomas Shumpert a 6’0 powerful point guard, brings his play-making skills, and Steve White, a gifted 6’7 forward who teamed up with Shumpert at South Division, brings his all-around game. White has verbally committed to St. Francis University, a Division I school in New York City.

The Runnin’ Apaches will count on some quality freshman to help carry the load. Al Graham, a 6’2 point guard from Jackson, Miss., will be counted on to help run the high-octane Cochise offense. Victor Reid, a 6’4 combo from El Paso, has a chance to be a true “Cochise type player” - kind of in the mold of Andre Hollingsworth. Perhaps the most intriguing freshman is 6’10 Johnny Clark from Mt. Edgecumbe, Alaska. He is a true post who is athletic and skilled. He needs to show it against college competition.

The Apaches are very optimistic for the upcoming season. The staff feels that there is a quality mix of talent and experience to help the team win its second ACCAC championship in three years. As always, team chemistry and toughness will be key to success. The ACCAC will be very competitive, with Arizona Western and Eastern Arizona College having very talented clubs. If the Apaches can really “toughen up, man up and buy in,” look for them to play for another championship. Come out and support the 2007-08 Runnin’ Apaches.
