Tips for Applying

Go to Cochise College or Another College/University.
Scholarships to Cochise College and other institutions are available through the Cochise College Foundation. Award amounts vary, and funds usually may be used to cover the cost of tuition, books and supplies. Scholarships are deposited directly into recipients’ Cochise College accounts. They do not have to be repaid. Recipients are determined by a variety of qualifying factors, as specified by donors, and may include financial need, grade point average, program of study, enrollment status, and leadership or community service.

Pay Attention to Deadlines.
Applications for most 2008-09 scholarships were due April 21, 2008. A new application cycle, with a new deadline, will begin in late fall or early spring, with awards made for the 2009-2010 academic year. Unofficial transcripts must be received by the Cochise College Foundation no later than one week after the application deadline.

Enroll in your classes in a timely manner. Otherwise, you may lose your scholarship.

Before You Apply
Make sure you are using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher as your web browser.

Obtain a working email address. You will receive notifications through this account, so be sure the email address you provide is current. Click here to look up your Cochise College email address, call the Student Development Center for assistance, or provide another email address you check regularly.

Obtain a college identification number. You may enter an identification number issued by another college/university or use N/A if you do not have a number. If you already have a Cochise College identification number but have forgotten it, contact the Advising Office.

Obtain copies of your unofficial transcripts* - high school, GED, or college. You must send your most recent unofficial transcripts, even if you sent them last year.

Obtain a letter of recommendation* from a teacher, counselor or employer. The best recommendation letters clearly demonstrate how well the writer knows the applicant.

It is helpful in assessing financial need if you also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance.

Depending upon the scholarship/s you choose to apply for, you may need to submit an essay in addition to completing the application. Draft your essay in another application and paste it into the appropriate section of the online application.

Know your academic plans. You will be asked if you are pursuing an associate degree or a certificate and for an academic major.

When given a choice of degrees and majors, if yours is not listed, choose "Other Degree/Major Not Listed."

*Digital copies of transcripts and recommendation letters can be uploaded into the system, and hard copies can be mailed to: Cochise College Foundation, c/o Scholarship Processing, 4190 W. Highway 80, Douglas, AZ 85607. Applications that are incomplete or missing documentation will not be accepted.

Provide Complete Answers to the Questions.
You will be asked to respond to three free-form essay questions: 1) Describe your educational and career goals, 2) Describe your financial circumstances and how a scholarship would help you to complete your education, and 3) Discuss your extracurriculuar activities, community service, and volunteer activities.

Your responses can be written in advance and pasted or uploaded into the STARS application system.

When responding to these questions, give some thought to how a scholarship will help you as you juggle your responsibilities and support a family or yourself, the confidence it could give you to continue your education, or whether you are the first in your family to attend college. Characterize yourself as a well-rounded student by describing your extracurricular activities. Describe one that is most meaningful to you.

Some scholarships will require an additional essay.

Complete the Entire Application.
Once you've completed your profile, STARS will recommend scholarships for which you may qualify. To finish the process, you must click "Apply Now" and provide the requested information for each scholarship for which you wish to apply. If you do not take this final step, your application will not be complete, and you will not qualify.

To stop the application process and return to it later, complete the section you’re working on, hit “Save and Exit,” and return to that section using the links at top left after you log in again.

Forgotten STARS Username/Password
Please contact the Cochise College Foundation at (520) 417-4100 or foundation@cochise.edu. Do not begin again as a new user.

The Selection Process
Applications are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee comprised of representatives from various Cochise College departments, the Financial Aid Office, and the Cochise College Foundation.

Scholarship recipients for 2008-09 will be notified via email in summer 2008.

If you receive a scholarship write a note of thanks to the donor!
