Karen A. Nicodemus, Ph.D.Dr. Karen Nicodemus has worked for Cochise College since 1986, when she was named head coach of the women’s basketball team and physical education instructor. From 1991 through 1998, she held several positions, serving as division chair for science, math and social sciences; director of institutional planning and assessment; interim dean of instruction; vice president for instruction; and acting president. In those positions, she took a leadership role on initiatives like planning, budgeting, assessment, curriculum, teaching and learning, and staff development. Dr. Nicodemus earned her doctor of philosophy degree in education administration from the University of Nebraska, where she also earned a master’s in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration. Her bachelor’s degree in history is from John F. Kennedy College in Nebraska. In July 1998, Dr. Nicodemus became the 10th president of Cochise College. Dr. Nicodemus is active within the state and national educational communities. In January 2005, she was appointed by Governor Janet Napolitano to serve as a member of the Arizona State Board of Education. She also serves on the Governor's P-20 Council and, most recently, was selected to serve as a member of the Accreditation Review Council of the Higher Learning Commission. Dr. Nicodemus previously served as a member of the Arizona-Mexico Commission board of directors, as well as on the boards of the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center and the Cochise Community Foundation. She previously was involved with the Arizona Community College Presidents’ Council (ACCPC), of which she is a past chair; the Arizona Community College Association (ACCA), past president; and the Rural Policy Roundtable of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). She also has served as a consultant/evaluator with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Dr. Nicodemus was selected as one of five University of Nebraska graduates to participate in Master’s Week in October 2004. She was recognized for outstanding achievement during the halftime celebration of the university’s homecoming football game. Since becoming president, Dr. Nicodemus has led Cochise College in a direction emphasizing the learning community by focusing on teaching and learning, access and diversity, and the use of technology and innovative instruction.
