Program Review Process

What is a program review?

A program review is a process involving a collaborative group of educators (a Program Review Team) possessing content expertise who conduct an in-depth examination of multiple facets of their specific program or service and its impact on students.

The goal is to gather data and information about a particular program or service, analyze and discuss this information, and generate a report including a set of recommendations for future improvements that represent the best judgment of the group.

Why are program reviews done?

As a learning community committed to continuous quality improvement, Cochise College recognizes that three of the most fundamental questions it can ask of itself are:
1. How does a program (or policy or procedure) facilitate learning?
2. How do we know?
3. How can we improve?

In order to respond to these questions, the Cochise College faculty, staff and administration are committed to a systematic process of self-examination. This process begins with classroom assessment and research designed to determine student learning at its most fundamental level and it concludes with demonstrations of institutional effectiveness in which the college measures such items as transfer rates and placement rates. Program review resides somewhere in the middle of this process.

Effective program reviews are essential for:
• maintaining departmental and program vitality
• demonstrating institutional effectiveness
• meeting accountability mandates at the institutional, state, regional, and national levels

The information gathered and analyzed during a program review will help with:
• planning
• decision-making
• personnel development
• program improvement
• effective utilization of district and college resources

How are program reviews done?

Program reviews are conducted according to the guidelines established by the College and available in the two program review manuals. One manual focuses on the review of instructional programs/departments and can be accessed through this link. The other manual focuses on the review of educational services and can be accessed through this link.

When are program reviews done?

In general each program will be reviewed every five years according to a calendar established and maintained by the Vice President for Instruction/Provost's Office. The schedule for 2000 to 2013 is available through this link.

In addition, the VPI/Provost's Office maintains an annual schedule of program reviews. The 2008-09 schedule is available through this link.
