College introduces new viticulture program through generous endowment pledge
Cochise College proudly announces a new viticulture program designed to prepare students for careers in the growing field of grapevine cultivation. Made possible by a generous endowment pledge honoring Ann Marie Stephens, the program addresses a critical need for workforce development in Cochise County’s flourishing wine industry.
Stephens, a trailblazer and champion for Arizona wines, envisioned leaving a legacy in the state’s wine industry. Her passion laid the foundation for this initiative. Stephens was instrumental in Arizona’s wine industry before anyone knew the state had vineyards and wineries. By establishing a program at Cochise College, she sought to inspire the next generation of students to focus on higher education.
The viticulture program will provide students with an education pathway in the scientific, technical and artistic aspects of grapevine cultivation, preparing them for careers in the wine industry. With campuses located in Douglas and Sierra Vista, near the largest vineyard in the state, including a center in Willcox, often referred to as Arizona wine country, the college is uniquely positioned to offer this program.
“Viticulture is agriculture, science, art and hospitality,” said Dr. James Perey, Cochise College’s Executive Vice President of Academics. “We are honored to bring this innovative program to our students and community, thanks to a pledge from Ann Marie Stephens. This reflects our commitment to providing accessible education that meets meaningful careers for workforce development.”
Students will gain hands-on experience and opportunities to network with industry professionals through partnerships and collaboration with local vineyards and wineries. Classes for the program will begin in the fall 2025 semester. Students interested in the program can begin enrollment by applying to become a Cochise College student—call (520) 515-5418 for more details.
