Parents' FAQs
Expand All +Yes! High school students wishing to earn college credit while in high school can earn college credit through dual or concurrent enrollment.
Dual Enrollment (DE) courses allow eligible students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Dual credit courses are taught at the high school, during the high school day, by a credentialed instructor and satisfy high school diploma requirements while earning college credit. Students interested in participating in the Cochise College DE program must meet with their high school counselor to discuss eligibility requirements and options. Dual credit courses are only available in the fall/spring and follow the high school’s calendar year. Dual credit courses are not available in the summer.
Concurrent Enrollment (CE) courses are not offered at or affiliated with the high school, but are taught at a location and time designated by the college and taught by a Cochise College instructor. Credits earned may be “reversed” back to the student’s high school transcript, as agreed upon by the high school administration. Students are encouraged to meet with their high school counselor before enrolling in concurrent courses to determine if they will satisfy high school diploma requirements. Students can take these courses in summer, spring and/or fall, and are not limited to just the high school calendar year. Students pursuing credit under the concurrent enrollment format will need to apply to the college and are required to meet with an Academic Advisor if they need help selecting courses that will meet their academic/career goals.
Per Arizona Revised Statute ARS §15-1821.01 – dual enrollment courses are offered to, and intended for, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior class students. For college courses not offered at the high school, there is no age/grade limitation; however, reversing college credits earned back to the high school is at the discretion and approval of the school administration.
DE courses vary by high school, from semester to semester, and year to year. Please contact your student’s high school counselor for availability and options. DE courses are available in fall and/or spring only.
Yes, tuition fees are charged for these courses. For courses taught at the high school, by a high school instructor, tuition is $20 per credit (fees subject to change). For courses taught by college professors, tuition follows the regular tuition and fee rate. While high school students do not qualify for financial aid, Cochise College offers an interest-free payment plan that allows down payments on tuition bills. Please visit the Tuition and Fees website for associated costs and payment plan information. Additionally, some high schools may offer tuition assistance or scholarships for these courses – please contact your student’s high school counselor to identify what services they may provide.
Most Dual Enrollment courses are offered in the fall and/or spring, with a few being offered from fall through spring. DE is not available in the summer. Tuition for fall and fall through spring classes are due in fall, while spring classes are paid for in the spring.
Concurrent Enrollment courses are available through the college during the spring, summer and fall semesters and are offered in a variety of formats (online, 16 week, 8 week, etc.). Please visit the Schedule of Classes website for additional information.
Grades are posted at the high school following the regular high school grading schedule. College grades are posted at the end of the semester in the student’s college account. Fall and spring grades are posted at the end of each semester. Yearlong grades are posted at the end of spring – there is no fall grade posted for yearlong courses.
Yes. While there are advantages to getting an early start on higher education, students and parents should seriously consider college class expectations and time commitment. Grades posted to a college transcript will follow the student for life and may affect future opportunities for employment, financial aid and academics.
Students must meet with their high school counselor to determine eligibility for DE course options. The high school counselor and a DE representative will work directly with the students on the admission and registration process. High school students taking CE courses must apply to the college and are required to meet with an Academic Advisor to complete mandatory advising to determine what courses will meet their academic/career goals. If a high school student wants to reverse college credits earned back to the high school, it is at the discretion and approval of the high school administration.
The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. According to this law, these rights transfer from the parent to the student once the student attends a school beyond high school. Students can provide this consent by filling out the Authorization for Release of Information form available in the Admission’s Office. Students must present a government-issued photo ID and sign the document in front of an authorized Cochise College employee.
Home taught students who would like to take college classes will need to apply to the college as a Concurrent Student and are required to meet with an Academic Advisor to determine what courses best meet their academic/career goals. Placement testing may be required for course eligibility. If students are using college courses to satisfy high school requirements, please work with your Home-School Association to confirm that the college courses will satisfy Arizona State high school graduation/diploma requirements.
Arizona Revised Statute ARS §15-1821.01
